Kilskyre/Moylagh v Trim I.H.C. Group B Rd. 4 Thursday 17/8/23 at Athboy

Final Score:  Kilskyre/Moylagh 6.18  Trim 2.13

A brilliant first half of hurling from Kilskyre/Moylagh in which they scored 6.9 laid the foundations for this decisive win over a gallant Trim side in this Round 4 Intermediate Hurling Championship Group B match played in Athboy on Thursday night.  This victory guarantees the North Meath men a place in the last 6 of the Championship.

A Willie McGrath goal in the 1st, minute was the boost Kilskyre/Moylagh needed after nearly 4 weeks without a game having received their second walkover of the competition in Round 3 when Kilmessan were unable to field a team. Trim replied with 2 points from placed balls in the 2nd and 3rd minutes but McGrath and Oisin McDermott from the right wing pointed to restore a 3-point lead by the 5th minute.  Trim pointed from play in the 8th minute but a 5-minute scoring burst from Kilskyre/Moylagh when they hit 2.3 between the 9th and 14th minutes set them on the road to victory.  McGrath pointed in the 9th and 10th minutes before Killian McCaffrey goaled in the 12th minute when he reacted quickest after a McDermott shot dropped short.  Sean Tunney added a point and in the 14th minute Tom Shine opened his account for the evening when goaling after a McGrath pass.  A Trim point was answered by another Tunney point in the 16th minute.  Trim pointed again in the 17th minute but McGrath who was tormenting the Trim defence at this stage goaled in the 21st minute from a Tunney pass and Tom Shine followed up with a point to leave the score 4.7 to 0.5 after 22 minutes.  Trim pointed in the 23rd minute but the response was emphatic with Daire Shine pointing and the wily veteran Peadar Byrne goaling in the 24th and 25th minutes.  Trim pointed in the 26th minute but McGrath immediately responded with a point.  Trim got a goal direct from a free in the 27th minute but almost immediately Killian McCaffrey fielded a great ball and laid it off to Tom Shine who netted his second goal.  Trim got the final 2 points of the half to leave the interval score at 6.9 to 1.9.

It was no surprise that the tempo of the game dropped in the 2nd half but Trim showed their battling qualities by going score for score with the victors in the first 10 minutes of the half.  Trim added 1.3 in this period as Kilskyre/Moylagh seemed to relax and get casual but Tom Shine with 2 points – 1 a free – and a long-range Daire Shine free saw them lead 6.12 to 2.12 after 10 minutes of the half.  As the evening darkness set in the game fizzled out from there to the end with Kilskyre/Moylagh adding points from Tom Shine (4) and a brace from McGrath with Trim’s only reply being a free in the 25th minute.
