Kilskyre/Moylagh v Gaeil Colmcille I.H.C. Thursday 14.7.22 at Grangegodden

Final Score: Kilskyre/Moylagh 1.10 Gaeil Colmcille 2.11

Kilskyre/Moylagh lost out to a more determined and disciplined Gaeil Colmcille side in their Intermediate Hurling Championship Group B match played in Grangegodden on Thursday evening before a good-sized crowd. The Gaeils had home advantage after the clubs agreed to a toss for venue due to the unavailability of the Athboy grounds. The game started evenly with the sides exchanging points before Gaeil Colmcille goaled in the 8th minute when Kilskyre/Moylagh failed to clear a long delivery to lead 1.2 to 0.3. The Gaeils added 3 further points from frees some needlessly conceded before Kilskyre/Moylagh hit back to level the match 1.5 each with 2 Tom Shine points and a brilliant Willie McGrath goal following an excellent catch in defence by Podge Muldoon and a sweeping move upfield. The Gaeils however responded well and hit the next 3 points – 2 from frees – before again following defensive hesitancy they goaled just on the half time whistle to lead 2.8 to 1.5 at the break.

The Kilskyre/Moylagh management rung the changes at half time making 3 substitutions and a number of positional switches. The changes appeared to make some difference but poor shooting and some determined defending by the hosts ensured any score got was hard earned. Three points from Tom Shine – 2 frees and a 65 – left 3 between the sides with 10 minutes remaining. With 3 minutes remaining the visitors looked to have a great opportunity to narrow the gap to 1 but the Gaeils goalkeeper produced an outstanding save at the expense of a 65 to foil Willie McGrath’s effort. Shine pointed the resultant 65 to leave a goal in it but the home side defended resolutely under serious pressure and broke downfield in the final minute to earn a free to secure a deserved victory.
