Kilskyre/Moylagh v Rathmolyon Div. 3 HL Round 7 Saturday 10.6.23 at Kilskyre

Final Score:  Kilskyre/Moylagh 1.20 Rathmolyon 1.15

Boosted by the return of some recent absentees including county panellists Sean Geraghty, Daire and Tom Shine Kilskyre/Moylagh ensured their survival in Division 3 of the Meath Hurling League with this victory over a gallant Rathmolyon side in what was a highly entertaining match played in Kilskyre on Saturday evening.  This was the first match to be played on the pitch in approximately 4 years due to the major developments that have taken place at the venue and it turned out to be a match befitting the occasion. A fine crowd turned out to watch on an overcast evening including a good travelling support from Rathmolyon.

The sides were evenly matched in the opening quarter and were level for the 4th time at 0.5 each after 15 minutes – Daire and Tom Shine with 0.2 each and an excellent Kit Og Lynch point on the run accounting for the home sides tally.  Kilskyre/Moylagh through Daire (1) and Tom Shine (2) hit the next 3 points before Rathmolyon briefly rallied to reduce the deficit.  The home side through 2 points each from Tom Shine and Willy McGrath finished the half strongly to lead 0.12 to 0.7 at the interval

The second half opened with the visitors goaling brilliantly from a 20 metre free in the 2nd minute and following up with a pointed free in the 4th minute to reduce the gap to 1 point.  Kilskyre/Moylagh scored 2 points in the 5th and 7th minutes through Lynch and a Tom Shine placed ball to lead by 3 points. The almost 20 minutes that followed was hurling of a high standard as the sides traded points in an excellent spell of hurling from both teams.  A Daire Shine goal following an excellent team move in the 26th minute eventually gave the home team some breathing space and extended the lead to 5 points according to our tally.  Tom Shine added a further point immediately afterwards and with some confusion on the field regarding the actual scoreline Rathmolyon pressed strongly looking for a goal to get back in the game but the home defence held firm.  A Daire Shine point in the final minute closed the scoring and despite officials from both sides having a different scoreline to that of the referee, they settled for the official’s tally.
