Kilskyre/Moylagh v Boardsmill Billy Byrne Cup Semi-Final 22.6.23 at Kilskyre

Final Score:  Kilskyre/Moylagh 2.17  Boardsmill 1.9

Kilskyre/Moylagh advanced to the final of the Billy Byrne Cup with this victory over Boardsmill in an entertaining and well contested match played at Kilskyre on Thursday evening last.

The hosts started brightly and had 1.3 on the scoreboard in the first 12 minutes.  Peadar Byrne struck the goal after an excellent Sean Geraghty run and pass.  Tom Shine had landed 2 frees and Kit Og Lynch opened the scoring with a well taken point from the wing.  Boardsmill opened their account in the 13th minute with a point but Lynch and Shine from a free replied in the 14th and 15th minutes.  Boardsmill then hit 4 points in a row from the 16th to 21st minutes to reduce the gap to a goal 1.5 to 0.5.  However, in the 24th minute Byrne and Geraghty again combined but this time it was Peadar Byrne winning possession and offloading a lovely pass to Sean Geraghty who finished to the net.  The sides exchanged points before the break was called with the score at 2.6 to 0.6 in favour of Kilskyre/Moylagh.

The home side were determined not to concede early scores in the second half and Shine and substitute Ronan McGuinness scored early points to extend their lead.  Boardsmill however hit back in the 4th minute with a well taken goal to reduce the deficit to 5 points.  Kilskyre/Moylagh responded immediately with a Shine point and the same player added 2 more – 1 from a free – to leave them leading 2.11 to 1.6 after 10 minutes.  Boardsmill pointed in the 11th minute but Kilskyre/Moylagh hit back with 3 further points from the hard-working Oisin McDermott, McGuinness and a Shine free to lead by double scores 2.14 to 1.7 at the 20-minute mark.  Boardsmill to their credit fought hard to get a goal to get back in the game but the home defence stood firm and held out well only conceding 2 points in the remaining time.  They added 3 points in that spell through Sean Geraghty and Shine with a “65” and a free to run out winners and qualify for the final of this competition.
